Our Guiding Principles

The Church’s teaching on marriage and the family is based on the Scriptures and the Magisterium. The Church believes and teaches that marriage is that between a man and a woman. Accordingly, a valid results from four elements: that spouses are free to marry; they freely exchange their consent; in consenting to marry, they have the intention to marry to marry for life, to be faithful to one another and to be open to children. In order words, the conjugal love between a married man and woman must be: free, total, faithful and fruitful, that is, open to life.
Aslo, the church's respect respect for human life, marriage, and the family is guided by the principles of her social teachings: "The Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity if the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for the society.: Again, the Church teaches that the person is not only sacred but also social. Hence, her call to family, community, and participation. Thus, marriage and the family are the central social institutions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined.
